Battery Tips PDF Print E-mail

Some batteries are HERMETICALLY SEALED DRY-CHARGED and are the newly introduced models manufactured by the latest technology. They are characterized with:

INSTANT ACTIVATION

The battery is hermetically sealed by aluminum foil or sealing tape. This enables the battery to be kept fresh up to the last moment of placing it in service even after a longer period of storage in so far as it is stored in cool place in dry-charged condition without being filled with electrolyte.

The battery is activated instantaneously, without initial charge, just by filling the electrolyte and wait about 20 minutes, then the battery can be replaced and used for starting vehicle. In case that additional charging is recommended for long life.

PREPARATION FOR INITIAL CHARGE

  • Place battery on flat surface and take off aluminum foil or sealing tapes on vent hole of vent plugs.
  • Fill with electrolyte (USE ONLY DILUTE SULPHURIC ACID prepared as standard battery electrolyte in table 1. The temperature of the electrolyte should be below 40 c) slowly and carefully, and then adjust electrolyte level falls a little in a few minutes after filling, refill with electrolyte having same specific gravity to restore electrolyte level in each cell.
  • The positive battery terminal (+) should be connected to the positive charger terminal (+) and the negative battery terminal (-).
  •  Charging time is about 2-5 hours and charging current as given in table 2,3
  • When the electrolyte temperature rise over 50 c during charging, the charging current should be decreased and charging time be extended proportionally so that charging can be continued.

REMARKS

  • Unless battery is filled with electrolyte immediately after removing aluminum foil or sealing tape, it loses dry-charged characteristics. Aluminum foil or sealing tape has hermetically sealed dry charged elements in each cell during shipment and storage to keep battery fresh until being placed in service. NEVER TAKE OFF the aluminum foil or sealing tape until filling electrolyte.
  • If electrolyte level falls down, always refill distilled water (NEVER SULFURIC ACID) to keep correct electrolyte level.
  • Avoid spillage and contact with skin, eyes and clothing

SERVICING

  •  Install battery to vehicle. Clean cable connectors with wire brush or sand paper to remove oxidation. Connect positive cable terminal to battery positive (+) pole, and cable negative terminal to battery negative (-) pole. CONNECT NEGATIVE CABLE LAST.
  • Do not leave battery out of service without fully charged after being filled with electrolyte. If left unused for longer than one (1) month, give refreshing charge at the below specified rate in TABLE 2, 3 before putting battery in service.
  • Refilling Distilled Water
  • Inspect, and check electrolyte level periodically, and always refill with distilled water (NEVER SULFURIC ACID) to keep correct electrolyte level (Up to bottom of the vent well or up to the UPPER LEVEL as indicated on the battery container).
  •  When battery has not been used, recharge battery once every month especially in tropical climate.
  •  Recharge battery when engine does not start, lights get dim or horn sounds weak.
  • In case that additional charging can use same direction of item no 3,4,5 in PREPARATION FOR INITIAL CHARGE but charging time should be extended proportionally.
  •  Wash off acid spillage, and keep battery clean, and thinly grease terminals and connections to prevent corrosion after installation on vehicle.

POISON/DANGER & CAUSES SEVERE BURNS

Contains sulfuric acid. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, or clothing. Antidote: EXTERNAL - Flush with water, INTERNAL - Drink large quantities water or milk. Follow with milk of magnesia, beaten egg or vegetable oil. Call physician immediately. Eyes : Flush with water for 15 minutes and get prompt medical attention.

DANGER

Batteries produce explosive gases. Keep sparks and flame of cigarette away. Ventilate when charging or using in enclosed space. Always shield eyes when working near batteries.
